A God-Sized Challenge

Tonia’s childhood had been safe and secure. She’d never been abused, never lived with an addict, never wondered where she would live or whether she was loved. Then, when she was nine, her parents divorced and her safe world was shattered.toniametcalf._h80_vertical_0.jpg

“My mom married a drug addict and she became a drug addict,” Tonia says. “He was a very abusive man. The first spanking I ever had was a whooping that left bruises on me.”

Over the years, Tonia was moved around, sometimes living with her mother and stepfather, other times with relatives or friends, never with a place to call home. “I felt like I wasn’t loved. I wasn’t worthy of having a good life,” she says.

Tonia’s stepfather cooked meth and, when she was 15, she started using it – the beginning of a 30-year addiction that led to broken and dysfunctional relationships, unemployment and despair.

Then, one day, after four years in an abusive relationship, Tonia had had enough. “I set my mind on getting clean,” she says. “I knew I was going to have to change.”

She came to the Mission and, through our New Direction Program, began to grow close to the Lord. “When I got here, I was spiritually broken. God said, ‘You need to be still so I can let you know Me.’ And that’s what happened! I feel so close to Him now.”

The emotional wounds she carried for more than 30 years are being healed, as well. “I feel wanted, confident, happy and secure,” she says.

Tonia graduated, is now in our Leadership Training Program and hopes to work here one day, sharing with others what the Mission has shared with her.

Because of your generous support, people like Tonia are facing their challenges and being transformed by God’s love here at the Mission. “I know that God is with me. I don’t have to worry about anything, because He’s all that I need.”
