A Son's Newfound Hope

When Ronnie was a little boy, he wanted to be just like his dad. “He was an alcoholic and, as a very young child, I’d drink leftover beer in his bottle or can,” he says. “When I got old enough to open the can, I’d get the first drink out of it.”

His parents divorced when he was 13 and, after that, Ronnie rarely saw his father. “I didn’t want to be anything like him anymore,” he says. “I’d never seen him do drugs, so I went heavily into drugs.”

Eventually, he found himself sleeping in an alley in Fort Worth. It was then he had a moment of clarity. “I didn’t want to die in that alley,” he says. “I’d always believed in God, and I started going to a Bible study behind a nearby church.”

Ronnie committed his life to Christ, and the church referred him to our New Creation Discipleship Recovery Program. “When I got here I said, ‘I’ll do whatever it takes.’”

Since then, he’s been clean and sober and growing strong in his relationship with the Lord. “I’m serious about it. I’m not lukewarm,” he says. “It’s all about Jesus.”

Ronnie has since finished our program, moved to Fort Worth and has a job and car of his own. He hopes to reconnect with his family in the future. “I want to say, ‘I’m sorry. I can’t go back and change anything, but I’m here for you now,’” he says. “I don’t want to let them down anymore.”

Because of your support, Ronnie, and others like him, find help and hope when they walk through the doors of Hiway 80 Rescue Mission – at Easter and always. “God’s got a purpose and a plan for me. I’m going to run my own race.”
