The face of homelessness in Northeast Texas is changing.

For the first time, women constitute the majority of homeless residents in area emergency shelters, according to a report released Tuesday by the Northeast Texas Homeless Coalition.

Songwriters association to hold benefit concert, art show

The Texas Christian Songwriters Association will hold a concert and art show Saturday to benefit Hiway 80 Rescue Mission.

The event will feature original works by local Christian musicians and artists.

It will be Saturday at Living Word Church, 1567 FM 1252, near Kilgore.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The concert will be 6 to 9 p.m.

Admission is free, but donations to benefit the Mission will be accepted.

Tyler volunteers fan out to count community’s homeless

Cindy Sulser, 57, of Tyler walked down the railroad tracks underneath the Beckham overpass and into the adjacent woods Thursday afternoon, hoping to find a woman named Margaret.

Mrs. Sulser was among a group of four, escorted by a Tyler police officer, to a known homeless camp in the woods where Margaret stayed.
